Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested on July 22, 1991 for the murders of eleven men and boys.In the days and weeks that followed, police uncovered gruesome evidence of Dahmer’s horrific crimes inside his Milwaukee apartment, including Polaroid photographs of his victims.
Nearly 30 years later, those same Polaroid photographs are used in a new graphic novel about Dahmer’s life and crimes.
The graphic novel, titled “Real Dahmer Pictures,” is written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Juan Doe. It tells the story of Dahmer’s life through the Polaroid photographs he took of his victims and interviews with those who knew him best.
Azzarello and Doe want to create a graphic novel offering a new perspective on Dahmer’s crimes.
“We wanted to do something different,” Azzarello told Vice. “Something that hadn’t been done before. And we wanted to focus on the victims.”
“Real Dahmer Pictures” is set to be released on October 9, 2018.

On October 7, 1991, Milwaukee police discovered the dismembered body of Tony Hughes. Officers had been dispatched to Dahmer’s apartment in response to a complaint from a neighbour who had heard noises coming from the apartment. When they arrived, Dahmer told them that the noise was coming from the refrigerator, where he kept the body of another victim, Konerak Sinthasomphone.
Dahmer then led the officers to his bedroom, where they found Polaroids of Dahmer posing with severed heads and dismembered bodies. Dahmer was arrested and confessed to killing 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.

In the early morning of July 22, 1991, Milwaukee police responded to a call from a frantic neighbour who had discovered two naked men running down the street. When the officers arrived, they found one of the men, 32-year-old Tracy Edwards, bleeding from the handcuffs used to restrain him. Edwards told the police that he had been held captive by a man named Jeffrey Dahmer and had barely escaped with his life.
Dahmer, a 27-year-old Milwaukee native, was arrested and taken into custody. A search of his apartment revealed a gruesome scene:
- Three decomposing bodies
- Body parts in the refrigerator
- Polaroid pictures of Dahmer’s victims
Dahmer would confess to murdering 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.
The Polaroid pictures Dahmer took of his victims were found in a filing cabinet in his apartment. Many photos were taken after the victim died, showing Dahmer posing with the corpse or body parts. One of the most disturbing images is a photo of Dahmer with his first victim, Steven Hicks, who he killed in 1978. In the photo, Dahmer smiles and gives a thumbs-up sign while Hicks’ body is lying on the floor behind him.
Other photos show Dahmer with his second victim, Stephen Tuomi, who he killed in 1987.
